My heart says manual and that I could learn it easily (I have scheduled lessons for tonight) but friends and family all say automatic for convenience. What do you like better, the manual or auto on the 335i? I found the manual a little touchy as maybe I just need to get used to it as I used to drive a VTEC GS-R 5-speed. The automatic was very smooth. Also how's the gas mileage on the manual when you're just cruising vs. Tearing up the roads?

Jul 19, 2007 How to describe this tuning on the 335i? Well is simply about style and making the car even more elegant. In simple words is the proof that tuning is not only about bad taste and exaggeration. Aug 02, 2017 Hey guys. Im doing an auto to manual swap on my 07 e90 335i. Is there any advice? Can I keep my own driveshaft? And i didnt get the harness it will be too much work to change it. Is there a diy on how to work with the auto harness? And any insturcions on coding with inpa?

I'm looking at buying a c.6 month old 335i touring but almost all for sale are automatics. First off, I assume this is a full auto box not automated manual? Secondly, I really don't want an auto.
Does anyone have experience of either engine/box combination? I haven't got as far as test drives yet and I guess they will tell me a lot more about what I want to know but was just looking for some heads-up advice.
If, as I suspect, manuals are rarer than hens teeth, I may have a long wait ahead of me or I may need a rethink.
Thanks.

hi,
although not a 335i, i do have a 330i touring with an auto box. I like you, would have preferred a manual, but the old ZF box works really well. It is a traditional auto with manual override. I drive most of the time in standard auto, but then in manual when i want some fun. The ONLY downside as far as i am concerned is when you are pressing on, say up a hill with hairpins and straights, the moment you hit the change up limit (around 6,250 rpm in mine) it changes up. this is especially annoying when you just want to come off the gas for a bend, as you'll suddenly be in the wrong gear!!!
But that is the only downside. I have really enjoyed the ease of use the auto brings plus it's so easy and relaxing in stop start traffic!

I was initially wanting a manual for my 335i, but gave up after finding only autos. Never driven any other auto cars before and is more than happy with the auto box in the 335i (mine is a normal auto with the paddles, not a DCT). There are 3 modes, normal, DS(sport?), and manual (where you can use the paddles).
Day to day driving in normal mode you hardly notice the gear changes because its so smooth, the engine has so much torque it will pull for what ever rev its in, and most of the time the auto box doesn't let the engine go past 3Krpm. The auto box has a 'kick down' feature, where the box with change down 1-2 gears if you nail the throttle all of a sudden. Initially I found this quite annoying since most of the time the engine is more than capable of pulling the car along without having to change down, but the box will only do this if you floor the throttle so having a slight more sensitive right foot has cured my main compliant about the autobox (there seems to be a trigger/switch when you press the accelerator pedal to 90%, if you push this trigger the box will 'kick down').
In sport mode the box is much more aggressive, and holds on the gear for longer, for fast driving cannot fault it. Rarely gets the gear wrong, and really lets you enjoy the fab engine.
Manual mode will let you take the engine to the red line and keep it there, but will still 'kick down' if you floor the throttle in 6th whilst doing 20mph, so you never have full control. The shift themselves are fine, I MAY be able to shift faster with a manual box but in reality it makes no difference to the pace of the car.
I never test drove a manual, but I've now had my Auto 335i for nearly 12months cannot say I miss not having the control of a full manual. In traffic/day to day life the auto box is so easy to live with, and for me doesn't at all effect the 'joy' of driving. If I had to buy again, I wouldn't choose a manual over an auto if all other things were equal..but I'm now over 30, so if could just be me getting old and lazy

Many thanks gangzoom, just the feedback I was after. I still have reservations about the auto as I prefer the control of the manual, not just the shift time but being able to choose exactly when to change and BM's generally have lovely manual boxes.
I really need to test an auto and see if it's as 'bad' as I'm expecting. At least with such low expectations I shouldn't be disappionted!!

I had the exact same dilemma except I was after a cab rather than a touring. I was dead set on a manual but after fruitlessly searching for many months I gave up and bought an auto. The auto is very good and in normal driving it is pretty much faultless. Even in spirited driving it is pretty good and the paddles are fun, however it is still missing that final nth degree of feedback, control and fun that you'd get with a manual.
For what it's worth as well, the few manuals that did come up for sale were all poverty spec with none of the other extra'soptions I was after so if the other options are important to you then just get the auto.

Bmw 335i Tuning Options
I was kind of the reverse, I wanted a 330/335 touring with a high spec, not bothered man or auto but secretly hankered after a modern auto, a manual 335 turned up in the spec I wanted but the high miles and less prefered box didnt put me off. The manual is good though, nice action, and the motor s strong enough to pull 6th at a slow speed so you can be pretty lazy although traffic jams are a pain so the auto box wouldve been nice. Try one, you may like it so you can concentrating on finding one with the right spec for you and just accept whatever box it comes with.

Same here, wanted a manual ended up with auto. The torque converter locks over c 2k revs and changes are then more akin to a dgs box. Good stuff I think. Still miss a manual sometimes though

I thought the 335i auto box was DCT a la the E9x M3 - is it not ?
Wednesday 2nd May 2012
Mine is 7 speed DCT (not M-DCT like the M3 as I was corrected a while ago).
Mine is the facelift coupe - have a feeling the pre-facelift is normal 6 speed auto.

Yep the older cars are normal auto although you can get them with paddle shifters as an optional extra. Facelift cars post 2009 IIRC came with a DCT box although this isn't the same DCT box that you get in the M3 but a cut down version with less shift programmes. The DCT's are supposed to be very good by all accounts. I'd really like to try one at some point.

DCT box is not available in the touring platformI'm on my 2nd 335d touring and I initially wanted a 330d manual but I could not find one with decent spec and miles at the time, it took some mild convincing of SWMBO to try an auto, which she did and actually liked, as have I, I've never missed a manual box in the car, and it suits the mannerism of the car perfectly.
Try one, I'm fairly certain you won't be disappointed

Before purchasing a manual 335i I test drove a DCT and conventional automatic 335i.
The DCT was good, but it's only available as a Coupe or Cab which rules it out for you.
The autobox is a conventional torque convertor automatic. It shifts effortless and wafts about beautifully. But to be honest if thats what you want from your car buy 5 Series not a 3 Series. My next comment is going to be bizarre and I doubt many will understand it but it was my findings anyway.
The 335i is quick. In the auto, it was almost boringly quick. Put foot to floor, car accelerates like a greased weasel and quickly shatters the speed limit as the power is relentlessly delivered ahd the box shifts for you. You just hold onto the steering wheel. This was really fun for about 10 minutes but quickly began to feel like it would get dull, fast. I mean there is only so many times you can power your way to 100mph in a few seconds before you get arrested, or crash into a kitten, or whatever. Paddles dont count, they feel a bit like a gimmick really - it isn't a DCT box and no amount of paddles will hide the fact torque convertor automatics are absolutely amazing for wafting but rather less enjoyable for pressing on and involving you in the drive.
The manual was no less fast. Infact it's probably quicker. But the fact you had to intervene to change gear felt more involving and briefly interupted the wall of power. This was far more enjoyable and it was slightly less easy to accidently find yourself doing 130mph.
So, yea. It's just a car that suits a manual better in my opinion.
On a slightly more doom-mongering note, as you are well aware a 6 month old 335i Touring will NOT be a cheap car. It will be a very expensive car. However it will not feel like a very expensive car. The E90 platform is now 7 years old and in terms of interior etc it's beginning to show it. This isn't to say it isnt nice, of course it is, but it no longer feels 30 grand nice, if you know what I mean. Its also right in the middle of being replaced which not only means the depreciation will be even more savage than usual but it also means that you are so close to being able to buy the considerably better new model. These things lose money hand over fist, I paid only £20k for a less than 3 year old Coupe with nav from a main dealer as an approved car - it was £40k new and over £30k at 6 months old. And thats without the downward pressure on values that the new mode will inevitably introduce.
With the budget I guess you have I'm not sure I'd entertain a 335i Touring. If you want one, buy a 2008/2009 LCI model (So it'll be fundamentally the same car) for a huge pile less. If you want to spend your full budget, I'd look for something else. What about an F11? It's a considerably better, newer, more modern car.

Agree with your sentiments there! I've been looking around for a nearly-new E92 335i for a few months but am refusing to pay the inflated prices being asked by BMW dealers for many of the reasons you've outlined above. The E92 will be the old model by the time I come to sell in two to three years time so paying 10% or more over top-book (which is what most dealers are asking) is just a recipe for huge depreciation. A car that's (say) two or three years old for a fair bit less money probably makes more sense, especially if you can negotiate longer than the usual one year AUC warranty as part of the deal; low mileage manuals with a decent spec are still hard to come by though....With the budget I guess you have I'm not sure I'd entertain a 335i Touring. Thanks for all the feedback, it's making interesting reading.
I really don't want the auto just because I want the control and feel of the manual, maybe a DCT wouldn't be too bad but not a full auto. Obviously I'll reserve final judgement until after a test drive but I'm using these posts to get initial impressions before I have to go outside in all this rain..
So, it's become obvious that there are few manual tourings around and no DCT option. I guess I'm in for a long period of looking then.
As a bit of background my car list is; I currently have a Focus ST, LR Defender & two integrales which will never go. In the past I had an M3 then further back Alfa 155 etc. The other consideration along the 335i was a B7 RS4 estate. I kind of veered away from these as they're now getting a bit old and finding a good one with low miles is getting harder. Any other suggestions considering my leaning in cars at the c£30k level? I take in the comments about the F10 but I quite fancied the E90.

B7 RS4 is a very good shout I think. Love the styling of those cars too. I think the newest one you can get though is a 2008 which I wouldn't class as too old but your opinion may vary. How about an S4 instead? I know it's not the full blown RS model but it's still a very good car and the new supercharged V6 is apparently a peach. A newer B8 model Avante (2009 onwards) is well within your price range.
Our go completely mental and get the RS6 with the 5 litre twin turbo V10!

The RS4 is in another league to the 335i in terms of cost to own.
Saturday 5th May 2012
My first choice was a S4, but my budget was only £20K so couldn't strecth to it.
The engine in the S4 is suppose to be fab, my mate has just ordered a new one and the interior looks much nicer than the 335i.
If I had £30K spare I would take a S4 over the a 335i.
The new F10 335i is using the same engine as the E9X, so has the same power levels, and to be frank the F10 deosn't really look much better than the E90 and i cannot really see how much better the handling can get.
